the fantastic, picturesque work of Nicolau Nasoni, an Italian
painter-decorator, who fell in love with the North of Portugal. An expert in sculpting granite into undulating shapes, Nasoni left his own unique mark on the baroque architecture and design of northern Portugal. Begin your tour in Porto, where Nasoni lived, and visit the church of Torre dos Clérigos, the city’s most distinctive monument, and move onto the cathedral (porch) and the Igreja da Misericórdia (façade). Next turn your attention inland. In countryside that is famous for the Alto Douro Wine Region - classified by UNESCO as world heritage - you will find more impressive works by Nasoni. The Casa de Mateus, close to Vila Real, is a palace best known for appearing on the Mateus Rosé wine label but is also the venue for a music festival every summer. And why not visit the monumental staircase of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, in Lamego? While you are in the region, you should stay at one of local manor houses, where you can appreciate the hospitality that has become the hallmark of the Portuguese. |
