Mertola MuseumTown E-mail

Discover Mértola, a pre-Roman town, the capital of a Taifa kingdom and the first headquarters of the military Order of Santiago.

Begin your visit at the Parish Church, one that is unique in Portugal, as it was adapted for Christian worship on the site of what was originally a mosque. This is what gives the building its unusual shape.

After visiting the Roman and Islamic museum centres and the Palaeo-Christian basilica, climb up to the top and enjoy an incredible view over the River Guadiana.

Close to Mértola and part of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park is Pulo do Lobo where the river narrows to a form a deep gorge with the two banks almost touching one another.

In a region that has been heavily populated since time immemorial, we suggest you also pay a visit to Castro da Cola.

Then make your way southwards to Cacela Velha, where the beauty of the village’s whitewashed houses is further enhanced by the blue of the sea. Here you can eat some of the best oysters in Portugal.
